Training is open to all doctoral candidates at Sorbonne University. The training catalogue is therefore available to all doctoral candidates in the doctoral schools of UPMC, UTC, MNHN, the Université Paris-Sorbonne and INSEAD.




Both doctoral candidates and supervisors may benefit from continuing professional education.

Doctoral training is meant to meet the needs generated by the research project and the doctoral candidate's career goals. It should allow doctoral candidates to develop knowledge and skills that will be useful in both their current and future positions.

In the complex and rapidly changing research and research professions, continuing education is an important way of developing and building on one's skills in every field, whether scientific, technical, organizational, social or managerial.

As employees, doctoral candidates are entitled to receive employer-provided continuing education. The doctorate is therefore an opportunity for them to take advantage of available training in order to develop, enhance and diversify their knowledge and skills beyond their scientific field.


The training courses in the Sorbonne University Doctoral College Catalogue are organized by the doctoral schools or by the Training & Careers Department. Certain courses are open to both doctoral candidates and doctoral thesis supervisors. A special training programme is also designed specifically for supervisors.

To attend training courses, doctoral candidates must develop an Individual Training Programme (ITP) at the beginning of their doctorate in collaboration with their thesis supervisor and doctoral school director. The Individual Training Programme should be designed to support the research project and the candidate's career goals. It may be changed at any time during the doctorate. Doctoral candidates may register for training courses in their Individual Training Programme once it is approved by their doctoral school.

Operating rule

Many doctoral candidates attend training offered by the Training & Careers Department. Most training courses are designed for small numbers of doctoral candidates so they can conduct in-depth work. Participants must comply with a few operating rules in order for us to provide training under the best logistical, educational and financial conditions possible.


  1. Registration confirmation: As soon as your registration request is received, you will receive a confirmation email.
  2. Wait list: If the course you have chosen is full, you will be placed on the wait list and will be informed of available spaces in other courses.
  3. Reminders: Two reminder emails will be sent to all training participants several days before the start of the training course.


  • Withdrawal: If you cannot attend the training, you can withdraw or postpone your registration up to seven days before the start of the training.
  • Excused absence: We will only accept withdrawals within less than seven days before the start of the training on submission of a written justification. You will remain registered for the training and be considered "excused", and you can register again for another session of the same training. 


Attendance is taken in all training sessions. On request, you may be issued a certificate of attendance.
