The conduction of the defense

The thesis defense consists of two parts: a presentation by the doctoral candidate of his or her research followed by a question and answer session with the members of the jury. After the defense, the jury will meet to discuss and then announce its decision to grant the candidate a doctorate or not.

The thesis defense is public, except with an exceptional derogation granted by the university president if the subject of the thesis is of a demonstrated confidential nature.

→ In practice: see the thesis submission and distribution - Non disclosure section.

The defense is traditionally followed by a "thesis celebration" organised at the doctoral candidate's discretion.

Designation of the President

During the thesis defense, the members of the jury designate a President and, where applicable, a reviewer for the thesis defense. The President must be a professor or equivalent or a teacher of an equivalent rank.

The thesis supervisor may not be chosen as either reviewer for the thesis defense or President. The thesis supervisor does not take part in the jury's decision.

Issuing of the Doctorate

The candidate's admission or deferral is announced after the jury deliberates.

This report shall serve to assess the candidate's ability to present his/her work and his/her mastery of his/her research topic.

The thesis defense report is sent to the candidate within one month of the thesis defense.

In accordance with applicable law, the doctorate degree is issued without indication of any distinction.
